Tourism in the CNMI
Tourism here in the CNMI, as we all know, is really suffering right now. With the disaster that happened in Japan and with the issue regarding the Marpi power poles, we are looking down a very dark road. As a young girl, I never fully understood how important tourism is to our economy, but since taking a tourism class in school, I’ve learned enough to understand how much the CNMI is suffering. Japanese tourists are the highest visitors to come visit the CNMI, second is Korea followed by China, and then Russia. Since airlines have pulled out, we have less tourists coming in. If only there was a way to keep available air seats open, we won’t have this problem.
No matter how many visitors we have lost, it doesn’t mean we give up on keeping our island looking beautiful. Our historical sites look historical. We have to put more effort in preserving memorials, historical sites, and beach sites. This is what tourists mostly look at when they want a vacation. They look at what the location can offer. Our island can offer a lot with the modern age, but not every destination can provide a tropical climate that always stays in the same temperature range. If we can keep our island clean and continue our great island hospitality, we can insure that tourists will come back.
