One of China’s leading high-end travel magazines turned its eye to the Northern Mariana Islands this month, with the recent visit of Elite Traveller magazine.

Elite Traveller distributes to 380,000 readers in 50 major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong. The magazine targets well-to-do young and middle-aged readers and is jointly run by Ctrip.com, a leading consolidator of hotel accommodations and airline tickets in China, and JOYU International Tourism Operating Group.

Subscribers are largely VIP members of Ctrip.com, and the magazine is also retailed in airports, newsstands, and convenience stories.

The Marianas Visitors Authority supported the familiarization tour by assisting with shooting permits.

“Our goal is to generate new interest through Elite Traveller that will bring more passengers to the Northern Marianas on our Beijing and Shanghai charter flights,” said MVA marketing manager Bruce Bateman. “Last fiscal year, visitors from China comprised 11 percent of all visitor arrivals, so this market remains a critical part of the islands’ overall tourism health.”

While in the Northern Marianas June 3-7, 2011, the 10-member crew spent two days on Tinian, lodging at the Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino and taking in an island tour and an island barbecue dinner show. On Saipan, the group stayed at Hyatt Regency Saipan and also covered Mariana Resort & Spa, Managaha, and various sites around the island. (MVA)
