Members of the Chuuk community in the CNMI are going to cast their votes in a special election for the governor of Chuuk State tomorrow, Wednesday, at the Garapan Central Park Roundhouse.

There are 3,000 Chuukese in the CNMI and most reside on Saipan; about 500 are voters.

Local courts deputy marshal Gideon Kikku, one of the Chuukese community leaders in the CNMI, told Saipan Tribune yesterday that they are encouraging all Chuukese voters to come out and exercise their right to vote for their governor.

Kikku, who is the press relations officer for the Chuukese community, said the voting will begin at 7:30am and will close at 5pm.

The governor’s position is vacant after Chuuk Gov. Wesley Simina became a member of Federated States of Micronesia Congress, representing the island.

An FSM governor’s term is four years. Simina was serving his second term as governor when he resigned last month after being elected to the FSM Congress.

The winner in the special election, Kikku said, will serve Simina’s remaining term from August 2011 to March 2013.

There are three candidates—Lt. Gov. Johnson Elimo, former FSM vice president Redley Killion, and FSM Social Security administrator Alexander Narruhn.

FSM is composed of four states—Chuuk, Yap, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. Chuuk is the most populous of the FSM states.
