A failure of leadership

The impending demise of the NMI Retirement Fund has jolted and woken us up from the deep sleep of apathy. The leaders whom we have elected to guide and steer us away from economic and governmental disaster—we have found out—have utterly failed in discharging their duties and responsibilities under the Constitution. And now people will have to suffer as a result of the ineptitude and arrogance of our elected leaders, as well as their abuse of power and of the public trust.

For over a decade now, our leaders knew that if they don’t shape up and correct our economic course and the way we govern ourselves, the Commonwealth ship of state would run aground. Blinded by the power of their office, however, they refuse to acknowledge the need to do something positive and constructive, so that we wouldn’t end up in the mess that we are now in: essentially bankrupt and with no idea what to do.

Almost everything is falling apart. Our only hospital and the public health system are on the verge of collapsing. The Public School System—for several years now—has been experiencing great difficulty trying to make ends meet, as shown recently by their inability to pay their power bill. And the Commonwealth, as we all know, has been experiencing its longest economic recession in history. Yet, our leaders—embarrassingly and in an apparent effort to distract from addressing the crises we are going through—still find the time to engage in political name-calling and in taking cheap pot-shots at one another. They fail to realize that such childish antics only demean themselves and erase any respect we have for them. It is a sign of immaturity. They should know that we elected them to office to serve the public and to promote our welfare and well-being, not theirs. And if they can no longer perform the duties and responsibilities required and expected of them, then clearly their immediate resignation from office is in order.
